So my mom, who currently drives an ‘06 v6 Jeep Commander, may be looking for a new car. Budget of around $15k. She really likes Wranglers and FJ Cruisers but the FJs are too damned expensive and we’re thinking that a Wrangler isn’t a great choice for highway commuting. This is what she wants:

5 seat SUV, she likes the styling of the Wrangler and the FJ

Better mpg than the Commander, hopefully above 20 avg

Good for highway commuting (quiet, comfortable, etc.)

AWD/4x4

2010+ model year

Around $15k

Under 100k miles

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I can’t think of a reliable car that satisfies all of these. She kinda likes the Jeep Renegade, but I’ve heard bad enough things about the 9 speed to try to steer her away from it. This is what I’ve come up with:

Lincoln MKC

MB GLK350

!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! (my personal favorite)

WK2 Grand Cherokee

Lexus RX

Anyone have any feedback/better ideas?

i’m biased

i’d definitely choose the WK2 over any of those tbh. my parents have a ‘16 limited and it’s honestly quite a nice car. and it has all the features any of those benzes/bmws/lexuses have for less. and compared to a relative’s X3, it’s way comfier

I’m a fan of Grand Cherokees too, I actually drive an ‘05 with the 5.7. I’ve got around 190k miles on it now and it still drives great. Interior is a bit cheap, but it’s not as bad as people make it out to be. Just standard mid 2000's interior design. Even the Germans weren’t doing much better at the time.

My only worry is that it’s a little bigger than she really needs and it won’t be too fuel efficient. It’s definitely a contender though. If I can’t come up with anything else I suspect this will be settled with test drives.

Xterra. It’s a good, truck-based SUV, which your mom seems to want. Here’s a nice 2014 I found. https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/detail/732046692/overview/?aff=share_text

the RX and GC are around the same size. they’re both quite larger than any of those other cars but ye, if you can find a used limited the interiors are quite nice and well put compared to previous GCs

Wrangler/FJ are not comfortable at all. The answer is Subaru - Forester, Crosstrek, or Outback. Probably Outback. It’s a car for a mom. And comfortable.

How about a used X5 or XC90. Or a Q7

Trust me, I’ve tried to push the wagon idea. Volvos, MB E-class, Outbacks, it doesn’t matter. She won’t go for it.

Maybe I’ll just throw her in an Outback and tell her to at least test drive it. Worth a shot, right?

Was going to suggest a 5th gen 4Runner but damn those are still expensive.

Don’t need the three rows of the XC90 anymore. X5/X3 is a possibility depending on reliability. My uncle had a 4.2l Q7, it drove beautifully but it had nonstop issues. He finally got rid of it after the pano sunroof leaked and fried all the interior electronics. $7k repair bill.

He, of course, replaced it with a Q3.

This is a “great deal”. First year SR5 with nearly 150,000 miles and probably RWD. You aren’t kidding!

They’re absurd. I was looking at 4runners and Land Cruisers for myself a while back and I just couldn’t justify the price. I know they’re reliable but paying over $5k for a 20 year old truck with over 200k miles doesn’t compute for me.

I bought a Grand Cherokee instead and I have no complaints. The 5.7 Hemi is a great motor. Drinks like a fish though.

I have a 3rd gen and can assure you that the 3.4 isn’t all that much less thirsty.

Not a terrible option, I’ll pass it along.

Thanks!

Ford Escape? it’s got AWD and the pre 2012 models look boxy like I get the feeling she likes. The V6 AWD gets pretty poor fuel economy though, the I4 is decent but I bet it’s not very spritely.

Subaru Forester?

Send her off with a Forester or Outback, since those seem to be decent still. The Foz can be given a bit more of a butch look, but not by much.

Yeah, or a Forester. Or there’s the Highlander, which is more reliable than any vehicle mentioned here (unless it’s a RAV4)

The MKCs should be decent value if you like fords. The resale is crap, so you should be able to snag one relatively cheaply. The Volvo’s are nice too, but you will pay a premium to maintain them, unless you DIY. The Lexus should be a decent vehicle to live with too. I’d stay away from the MB as it will likely get expensive to keep on the road, and the grand Cherokee, eh maybe, but if she must stick with a Jeep, then much better than a wrangler or any of the smaller fake jeeps.
